5:00 PM — 7:00 PM — PMI Reception

Tuesday, April 19

The future is a difficult to imagine. Predicting the future is even harder. Our jobs are fairly simple - generate power so that every day the lights come on when someone flips the switch.
That is a simplistic view of what we in the power industry have to face each day to achieve the goal. With changing regulations and technology, doing our job becomes more difficult each year because it is us that have to make the lights come on. But we have to do this while meeting every rule and regulation imposed upon us by government – all the while offering prices that the customer can afford.
But why can’t our jobs be as fun as it was for Ben Franklin, Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla? Let’s shelve the rhetoric about regulation, cyber security threats and fuel type arguments, and instead build the power generation industry of the future?
Hear Leo Denault’s keynote address as he opens the 18th Annual ELECTRIC POWER Conference and Exhibition and inspires us to learn more and dream bigger.
  • Keynote
    • Big Easy - Big Dreams
      Abstract
Leo Denault, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Entergy
Electricity is the foundation of global growth; however, over one billion people have insufficient power today. By 2025, we’ll see a 50 percent increase in the demand for power. To meet these challenges, there is a dynamic transformation under way across the entire energy value chain to maximize opportunities across the business and operations. Inexpensive sensors and big data, coupled with advancements in analytics and integrated software intelligence into hardware assets and control systems enable new and existing power generation, grid, and power consumption assets to operate at much higher levels of performance and operational effectiveness in order to drive smarter economic outcomes. Learn more about the future of energy and discover game-changing innovations.
  • Keynote
    • The Digital Transformation of Electricity
      Abstract
Scott Bolick, Head of Software Strategy and Product Management, GE Digital
With the Clean Power Plan in force what will the future of the power industry look like. This panel of generation leaders will discuss how demand for Clean Power is changing the way they are approaching - electricity demand, customer loyalty, utility profits, etc.? With so many new technologies about to break through like long life batteries (energy storage), lower costs renewables, new nuclear prospects etc… how can we better prepare for the future? Are we blurring the lines between DG and utility. These questions and more will be discussed at the 18th Annual EP Executive Roundtable.

The coal-fired power industry is on track to reach a critical point in personnel dynamics during which a significant number of long-time employees with valuable corporate and industry knowledge prepare to retire. Yet, the number of young professionals entering the industry work force is not on par with the number of employee who are set to exit. This dynamic has made the importance of information exchange, mentorship, and networking amongst industry professionals of utmost importance. This presentation will discuss topics such as how the industry has changed in the last decade, the direction the industry is headed, and advice for young professionals. A round robin, Q&A, discussion session will close out the presentation.

There are two choices: fix the worker or fix the system. Fixing the worker means training, disciplining, or terminating a person who did something they didn’t mean to do in the first place and don’t intend to do again. In fact, they are the one most likely NOT to do it again as they’ve learned the lesson the hard way. Fixing the system means looking at breakdowns that set the worker up to fail and will be better for the worker, the organization, and is really the only reliable path forward. This session explores how to move from a “crime and punishment” model of managing safety to a “diagnose and treat”. You have to choose: blame or learning culture. You can’t have both.

Efforts to increase plant reliability are often focused on equipment but many plant trips and equipment failures are triggered by human actions. This means reliability ultimately comes down to people. We begin with an understanding that work in power plants is variable and complex. This leads to a different approach to work than traditional safety systems. For example, practices focus on developing deep knowledge and improving decision making. In these sessions, practical strategies and tactics will be shared to move toward being a highly reliable, resilient organization.
