Moving Beyond Operational Excellence
Building Bridges to Nuclear’s Future Through Innovation, Advocacy and Market Reform
For decades, nuclear operators have been focused almost exclusively on running nuclear facilities at world class levels of safety and operational excellence. However, poor market conditions, increased regulatory requirements and the lack of equitable federal and state energy policies is changing all that. Today, we must move beyond operational excellence and find ways to build enduring value for our plants through innovation, cost optimization, advocacy and aggressive, proactive outreach to policy makers, regulators and elected officials.

Smart Cities and the Internet of Things both promise greater connectivity among people and devices and increased information sharing…and electricity is at the heart of it all! A world-leading test facility known as Mcity is in operation at the University of Michigan. At Mcity, companies of all stripes are testing vehicles, communications, and advanced information sharing in an outdoor urban environment. Attend this session to be briefed on Mcity and the U-M Mobility Transformation Center, highlighting its mission and ongoing work to help advance the development of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs), which hold the potential to dramatically improve traffic safety, while reducing fuel use and carbon emissions, and increasing accessibility to transportation.

The issues facing Regional Transmission Organizations (RTO)/Independent System Operators (ISO) remain unchanged, and by some accounts, are continuing to deteriorate. At the top of the list are the rising concerns of cyber security. As more systems are hacked across North America, RTO/ISO and power companies invest time and resources in addressing possible attacks and the impact associated with these breaches. Just as important is system stability and reliability, much of it stemming from the financial commitment to maintain spinning reserves to accommodate renewable energy on the grid. The wholesale / commercial / and ever growing residential to the market’s ability to provide financial incentives for the startup and operation of conventional generation remains a fine line to walk. And no less critical are issues related to natural gas and how possible initiatives by the Trump Administration to ease environmental rules around coal could impact the generation mix.
Plan to attend this timely session as leaders from RTOs, ISO, and Power Generators discuss these issues and related topics.
