Nuclear is still one of the lowest CO2 emissions per gigawatt hour, surpassed only by Geothermal and Wind, the cost is not as competitive in the light of lower natural gas prices. Are there new technologies out there that will help solve climate change at a better price? Yet, the number of young professionals entering the industry work force is not on par with the number of employee who are set to exit. This dynamic has made the importance of information exchange, mentorship, and networking amongst industry professionals of utmost importance. This presentation will discuss topics such as how the industry has changed in the last decade, the direction the industry is headed, and advice for young professionals. In fact, they are the one most likely NOT to do it again as they’ve learned the lesson the hard way. This means reliability ultimately comes down to people. We begin with an understanding that work in power plants is variable and complex. This leads to a different approach to work than traditional safety systems. For example, practices focus on developing deep knowledge and improving decision making. In these sessions, practical strategies and tactics will be shared to move toward being a highly reliable, resilient organization.

                                                Chair

Beth Lay, Director, Human Performance, Calpine Corporation

                                                Speakers

Case Study - This session will look at the range of generation options for microgrids, where they are being deployed, and why. It will also explore new technologies being used to integrate variable renewable generation sources into microgrids. Although microgrids have traditionally been developed by large campus-type energy users, utilities are beginning to see how they can be a valuable aspect of resource planning.
