John Ragan
Executive Vice President and Regional President, Gulf Coast
John oversees NRG's largest regional presence, its very large and diverse power generation portfolio and NRG's relationship with electric cooperatives and municipalities in Louisiana, Arkansas and Texas. These states make up NRG's Gulf Coast Region. John previously served as Regional President, Texas, before the Gulf Coast region was created. He has also served as NRG's Chief Operating Officer and President of NRG's Northeast Region, before it expanded into the current East Region.
John began his career with Getty Oil Co.'s upstream exploration and production division in 1983. He took on increasing roles of responsibility at Mirant Corporation, including Senior Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer for North America and Chief Executive Officer, International Group. He then joined FPL Energy (now NextEra Energy Resources) as Vice President of Business Management for the northeast region, later becoming Vice President of Trading, Transmission and Operations. He is a former board member of both the Southern Gas Association and Families First, an organization focused on children in jeopardy. He joined NRG to lead the Northeast Region in late 2006.
As the highest ranking executive in Houston, one of NRG's dual corporate headquarters, John also takes an active role in the company's activities and commitment to the city and the region. He serves as chairman of the Houston Food Bank, the largest food bank in the U.S., and serves on the boards of the Galveston Bay Foundation, the Houston Technology Center and Central Houston, Inc. He is also chairman of the South Texas Project Nuclear Operating Company, director and executive board member of the American Diabetes Association's Houston chapter, and honorary chairman of the association's “2013 Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes.” He is a three-time recipient of Who's Who in Energy in Houston for 2011, 2012 and 2013.
John earned both Bachelor's and Master's of Science degrees from West Virginia University and an MBA in finance from Tulane University's A.B. Freeman School of Business.
